On our way to Africa, we spent two nights in Dubai with one full day to explore—and it was absolutely worth it. Despite the intense July heat, we managed to pack in some incredible sights—and enjoy a bit of luxury, too. Dubai is a city where the past and future exist side by side. In Old Dubai, you’ll find traditional souks, historic wind-tower houses, and the calm waters of Dubai Creek that once served as a trading hub. Just a short drive away, New Dubai dazzles with futuristic skyscrapers, luxury malls, and man-made wonders like the Palm Jumeirah. This contrast makes the city a fascinating blend of heritage and modernity and our whirlwind tour gave us a great taste of this beautiful city.

One Day In Dubai Travel Guide:

We landed mid afternoon after a 15 hour flight from Dallas to Dubai on Emirates Airlines and checked into The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai, a beachfront oasis in the Marina area. It was the perfect retreat: peaceful, luxurious, and just steps from the water. We spent our first afternoon unwinding by the pool with cold drinks in hand, recovering from the long journey. That evening, we dined at the hotel—an elegant, relaxing meal that set the tone for the rest of the trip. After some much-needed rest, we woke up early, ready to make the most of our one day in Dubai.

We started our full day city tour with a visit to the iconic Burj Khalifa and took in the stunning views of Dubai’s skyline from the observation deck. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, standing at a staggering 2,717 feet. Completed in 2010, it features a unique design inspired by Islamic architecture and offers breathtaking views from its observation decks. As a symbol of innovation and ambition, the tower represents Dubai’s rapid transformation into a global metropolis. It’s a must see!

Just nearby, we made a quick photostop at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo inside the Dubai Mall. This mall is one of the largest shopping and entertainment destinations in the world, home to over 1,200 retail stores and countless dining options. Beyond shopping, it features top attractions like the aquarium, an Olympic-sized ice rink, and direct access to the Burj Khalifa. It’s a must-visit hub for both tourists and locals alike.

Dubai’s new architecture is defined by striking innovation, futuristic designs, and record-breaking structures and the city continually pushes the boundaries of modern design. Everywhere we looked there was amazing architecture and it’s impossible not to feel inspired by how boldly Dubai blends art, technology, and ambition in its skyline.

We then headed to Old Dubai for a traditional abra boat ride across Dubai Creek. On the other side, we dove into the sensory overload of the Spice Souk—a highlight of the day. The narrow alleyways were packed with shops displaying overflowing sacks of saffron, cinnamon, rose petals, dried lemons, and more. The air was thick with rich aromas, and the shopkeepers were friendly and eager to offer samples and spice-blending tips. It felt like stepping into another world—vibrant, authentic, and buzzing with energy.

Just a short walk away, is the Gold Souk—one of the most dazzling places we’ve ever visited. Walking through the Gold Souk felt like entering a treasure trove. Nearly every window was packed with rows of glittering gold jewelry—24K bangles, intricate bridal sets, heavy necklaces, gold coins, and even full-body gold pieces displayed like art. The craftsmanship was stunning, with everything from delicate modern designs to traditional Arab styles. Whether you’re looking for investment pieces or just browsing, it’s a gold lover’s dream. We couldn’t resist and ended up scoring a great deal on a beautiful blue sapphire pendant set—a favorite souvenir from the trip.

One modern highlight we wish we’d had more time to explore was the Museum of the Future. Its stunning torus-shaped building looks like something from a sci-fi movie, showcasing cutting-edge innovation and technology. The museum offers an inspiring glimpse into what’s coming next in science, sustainability, and design—definitely a must-see for any future-focused traveler.

In the afternoon, we toured Dubai’s coastal side. Driving along Jumeirah Road, we passed the stunning Jumeirah Mosque and stopped for photos at Jumeirah Beach. Then we admired the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai’s famous sail-shaped hotel perched on its own island. Known as one of the most luxurious and expensive hotels in the world, the Burj Al Arab’s striking architecture and opulent gold-leaf interiors make it a must-see, even from the outside. We strolled though the charming Souk Madinat, a beautiful market with canals and shopping, which felt like an old Arabian town with a luxury twist.

Next, we drove out to Palm Jumeirah, a remarkable man-made island shaped like a palm tree. It’s an engineering marvel, stretching into the Persian Gulf and lined with luxury hotels, private villas, and pristine beaches. From the road, you can see the famous Atlantis, The Palm resort, a grand hotel with its distinctive pink facade and water-themed attractions, including an aquarium and waterpark. Palm Jumeirah feels like a mini city itself—a perfect blend of luxury living and stunning coastal views.

Bonus Tip: If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss tasting Dubai’s Famous Chocolate! Dubai is a sweet lover’s paradise. The chocolates often feature exotic Middle Eastern flavors such as saffron, rose, cardamom, and dates—adding a unique twist to classic favorites. My favorite is the coated wafer layered with custard, then topped generously with crushed pistachios or other nuts. You can find these chocolates at places like Souk Madinat, Dubai Mall or duty free at the airport—perfect for gifts or a delicious souvenir to bring home.

There’s so much more to discover in Dubai—but for a one-day stop, this was the perfect taste of Dubai’s glamour, history, and culture…just enough to fall in love! We hope to return again soon…although not in the blazing hot summer.
