Our 10-Day Magical Kenya Safari: Saruni Samburu, Borana Lodge & Offbeat Ndoto

A safari in Kenya is more than a holiday—it’s a life-changing experience! From soaring over the landscape in a hot air balloon to watching thousands of wildebeest thunder across the Mara River, every day offers something unforgettable. We recently returned from a 10-day Kenya safari itinerary that took us from the rugged north of Samburu to the iconic plains of the Masai Mara. This incredible itinerary was brought to life by Safari Experts, who crafted every detail with care, passion, and local knowledge. Thanks to their expertise, every transfer, lodge, and activity felt seamless and magical. Here’s how it unfolded:

Days 1–3: Saruni Samburu – A Remote Luxury in the North

Our adventure began in Samburu, a wild and less-traveled region in Northern Kenya. After a short flight from Nairobi, we arrived at Saruni Samburu, perched on a rocky outcrop in the Kalama Conservancy. The views alone were worth the trip—vast stretches of untouched wilderness stretching to the horizon.

Saruni’s open-air villas blended beautifully with nature while offering total comfort and style. Game drives here introduced us to the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the gerenuk. Samburu is quieter than the more famous reserves, which made for a serene and deeply immersive experience. This solitude made each wildlife encounter feel deeply personal.

Days 4–6: Borana Lodge – Conservation in Action

From Samburu, we journeyed south to the Borana Conservancy, located on the Laikipia Plateau near Mount Kenya. Our stay at Borana Lodge was the perfect blend of rustic charm and eco-conscious luxury. This family-run property is at the heart of Kenya’s rhino conservation efforts, and it shows.

We had the rare opportunity to track black and white rhinos on foot alongside expert rangers. Seeing these incredible animals in their natural habitat, and learning how they’re monitored and protected, was one of the most powerful experiences of the trip.

The lodge itself is a dream—stone cottages with sweeping views, roaring fireplaces, and a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the valley. Game drives brought us face to face with lions, elephants, buffalo, and cheetahs.

One of the most unique and magical experiences at Borana Lodge was horseback riding through the conservancy alongside graceful giraffes. There’s something truly special about moving quietly on horseback through the open plains, with giraffes gently browsing nearby and zebras grazing just a few feet away. It was an intimate way to connect with nature—far more peaceful and immersive than a traditional game drive—and a memory that will stay with us forever.

One evening, our guide surprised us with a special sundowner at Pride Rock, the very inspiration for Disney’s The Lion King. Standing on this iconic outcrop, was surreal—like stepping into a movie scene brought to life.

Days 7–10: Offbeat Ndoto & the Magic of the Masai Mara

Our final stop was the iconic Masai Mara, and it truly delivered the grand finale. We stayed at Offbeat Ndoto, a small, intimate camp located in the Mara North Conservancy.  With beautifully designed tents that blend modern comfort and style, Offbeat Ndoto offers an intimate and exclusive safari experience. Its personalized service and secluded location made us feel like we had the wild all to ourselves.

This part of our journey coincided with one of the most dramatic spectacles of nature: the Great Migration—the awe-inspiring movement of over two million wildebeest and zebra across the plains. We were lucky enough to witness a Mara River crossing: wildebeest piling into the water, chaos erupting as crocodiles lurked and currents surged. It was wild Africa at its rawest and most emotional.

Another highlight was our hot air balloon safari. We took off before dawn, rising gently above the golden plains as the sun crept over the horizon. Below us, elephants, giraffes, and hippos began their morning routines. After landing, we enjoyed a champagne breakfast in the bush—an absolute bucket list experience.

Each day in the Mara was thrilling. We watched a lioness carefully stalking her prey through tall grasses, only to be interrupted by playful cubs tumbling nearby. A beautiful cheetah sharing a kill with her cub. Herds of elephants meandered along the riverbanks, while graceful giraffes nibbled treetops as zebras and wildebeest grazed in peaceful harmony. The Mara’s incredible diversity kept us on the edge of our seats every moment—wildlife encounters here felt like nature’s own Broadway show.
