There’s something that happens in midlife that no one really talks about: the way we begin to see ourselves differently. Maybe that’s why midlife fashion feels different, too. For years, getting dressed can feel like a series of rules. Dress for work. Dress for the kids. Dress for your body. Dress appropriately. Dress to look younger. Dress to look thinner.

And then, somewhere along the way, you start thinking: What if I just dressed like me? I’m less interested in following the rules and much more interested in how something makes me feel. I want clothes that are comfortable, yes—but I also want them to have personality. I want to feel feminine, confident, and maybe even a little bit unexpected.

That’s exactly what drew me to these two dresses from Alden Adair.

The Elliot Dress feels like wearing a piece of art. The bold botanical print, with oversized calla lilies in blue and pink against rich burgundy, olive and golden orange, makes a statement all on its own.

Then there’s the Kyra Dress. It’s sophisticated without feeling overly formal. Its beautiful French blue color, classic collar and button-front bodice give it a timeless feel, while the dramatic bubble-hem midi skirt adds a playful twist.

So, How Do We Start Dressing Like Ourselves?

If you’re feeling a little disconnected from your style these days, start small. You don’t need to overhaul your closet or suddenly become a fashionista. Just start paying attention.

Notice the pieces you reach for again and again. What colors make you feel happy when you see yourself in the mirror? Do you love a great dress, a fabulous pair of jeans, a statement necklace, or a beautiful shoe? Pay attention to those little clues. They’re telling you something about your personal style.

And give yourself permission to let go of the things you’re wearing simply because you think you’re supposed to. If you’ve been holding onto a dress because you used to love it, but it doesn’t feel like you anymore, that’s okay. Our style is allowed to evolve right along with us.

Most of all, stop waiting for the “right” occasion, the “right” size, or some future version of yourself. If something makes you feel beautiful, wear it. If a color makes you smile, buy it. If you feel like wearing the statement earrings on a Tuesday afternoon, go for it!

I think that’s one of the best things about getting older—we get to know ourselves better. And our clothes can reflect that.

So here’s my challenge: this week, wear something simply because it feels like you. Not because it’s trendy. Not because it’s flattering according to someone else’s rules. Not because you’re trying to look younger.

Just because you love it.

Because the woman you are today deserves a wardrobe that celebrates her.

Maybe that’s the best part of midlife style: we know ourselves better now.
